- 15 ounce can of tomato sauce (plain and unseasoned)
- 1/2 cup pitted cherries fresh or frozen
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar or sugar-free brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1-2 teaspoons chipotle peppers in adobo sauce chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Add the tomato sauce, pitted cherries, sweetener, red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, chopped chipotle peppers in adobo, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to a large high-powered blender.
Thoroughly blend the ingredients until the mixture is completely smooth.
Pour the BBQ sauce mixture into a saucepan and simmer it over low heat for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. It helps the flavors meld and allows the sauce to slightly thicken.
Remove the BBQ sauce from the heat and let it cool to room temperature before using, or serve it warm if you prefer.
- Use Plain Tomato Sauce: Make sure to use unseasoned, plain tomato sauce, not marinara or pasta sauce.
- Adjust the Heat: Start with one teaspoon of chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and add another teaspoon if you prefer it spicier.
- Vinegar Swap: You can use apple cider vinegar instead of red wine vinegar.
